OL98: Cannot edit text in message received as Plain or HTML text

SYMPTOMS

The Custom Toolbar button, Edit Message, is unavailable at times.


CAUSE

The toolbars, and menus, although customizable, are modal. In other words, certain buttons and menu items will be visible depending on what type of e- mail message you are viewing. This is by design.


MORE INFORMATION

The Edit Message command is designed to allow editing of HTML or plain text email messages before forwarding or replying. The button or menu item, will only be available when you open a message that was created in HTML or plain text format. If you open a mail message that was created and sent as Microsoft Outlook Rich Text or Wordmail, the button will not appear on the toolbar, and it will not be available under the Edit menu.

Steps to Reproduce Problem

  1. On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Mail Format Tab.


  2. Under Mail Format, click to select HTML and click OK.


  3. Open a new mail message and then on the View menu, point to Toolbars, and click Customize.


  4. On the Commands tab under Categories, click to select Edit. In the right panel, drag Edit Message to the toolbar on your open message. Click Close and then send the message to yourself.


  5. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 except click to select Microsoft Outlook Rich Text.


  6. Send a new mail message to yourself.


  7. Open the HTML message and note that the Edit Message button is on your toolbar. Close the message.


  8. Open the Microsoft Outlook Rich Text message and note that the button is now missing.
