OL98: Error Message Mapisp32.exe Caused an Access Violation Fault in Kernel32.dll

SYMPTOMS

In Outlook, when you attempt to send an e-mail message with a file attached, you may receive the following error:

Mapisp32.exe caused an access violation fault in Kernel32.dll
When you send an e-mail message with no attachments, the error does not occur.


CAUSE

This error message may occur if the Happy99.Worm program is present on your computer.

This program was installed when you double-clicked a program called Happy99.exe. This program is propagated through e-mail as an attachment. Opening the attachment installs and renames files without the user's knowledge.

Before starting, log off all open network or modem connections. To resolve this error message, rename the files the Happy99.Worm has affected. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.


  2. In the Named box, type Ska.*, and then click Find now.


  3. In the found items box, right-click Ska.exe, click Rename, and rename it Ska.old.


  4. In the found items box, right-click Ska.dll, click Rename, and rename it Ska.bad.


  5. Click New Search and in the Named box, type Wsock32.*, and click Find now.


  6. Rename Wsock32.dll to Wsock32.bad, and rename Wsock32.ska to Wsock32.dll.


  7. Click New Search, and in the Named box type Happy99.exe.


  8. As you did in the steps above, rename Happy99.exe to Happy99.bad.
