OL98: Exporting with UNC Path Saves File to Local Drive

SYMPTOMS

When you export a file from Microsoft Outlook 98 to a network drive, Outlook may save the file on your local computer rather than its intended destination.

CAUSE

You specified the file's intended destination using the Universal Naming Convention (UNC) for the network drive.

   Example: \\servername\sharename\filename

RESOLUTION

Map a path to the intended network drive and use the mapped drive letter to designate the path.

   Example: F:\filename

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Outlook 98.

To Map a Path to Another Computer

1. Right-click the Windows Start button and click Explore.

2. On the Tools menu, click Map Network Drive.

3. In the Drive box, click the drive letter you want for the connection.

4. In the Path box, enter the path for the network connection.

      Example: \\servername\sharename

Use the drive letter from step 3 to specify the path for the exported file.

Steps to Reproduce Problem

1. On the File menu, click to select Import And Export.

2. Click "Export to a file" and click Next.

4. Click to select a file format from the list and click Next.

5. Click to select the folder to export from, and click Next.

6. Type the UNC path and filename.

      Example: \\servername\sharename\filename

Outlook saves the exported file to your computer rather than to the specified UNC path.
