OL98: Fax Uses Incorrect Country Code With Windows NT

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Outlook 98 if you set your dialing location to a country other than the United States and then send a fax to a ten-digit telephone number, such as (406) 222-2222, the country code incorrectly resolves to a number other than +1.

CAUSE

This problem occurs due to a Telephony Application Programming Interface (TAPI) problem with Windows NT, version 4.0.

RESOLUTION

You can work around this problem by explicitly typing the country code in the fax number field. For example, to send a fax to (406) 222-2222 in the United States, type +1(406) 222-2222 in the fax field.

Your profile must include a Fax service in order for fax numbers to appear in your Address Book. For Outlook Contacts use these steps to force the correct country code:

1. Start Oulook and open your Contacts folder.

2. On the Contacts menu, click New Contact.

3. In the Full Name box, type the contact's name. In the Business Fax box,

   type +1 (the country code for the United States) followed by the area
   code and remaining seven digits of the fax telephone number, as in the
   following example:

      +1(406) 222-2222

4. On the Toolbar, click Save and Close.

5. On the Tools menu, click Address Book.

6. In the Show Names From list, select Contacts, then select the name

   of the contact created in step 4. The address appears as:

      ContactName@+1 (406) 222-2222.

If you do not see the fax number listed, you may not have a Fax service installed in your profile. Unlike Microsoft Windows 95, Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 does not include a Fax service.
