OL98: MSN Configuration Appears When Starting Outlook

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to start Microsoft Outlook 98 using the Outlook icon on the Windows desktop after you upgrade to Microsoft Windows 98, a configuration dialog box for Microsoft Networking Online Service (MSN) may appear instead.


CAUSE

Windows 98 Setup tries to detect the existence of MSN, and if found, associates an update utility with the Inbox or Outlook icon. When you double-click the icon, the MSN update utility starts, providing you with the ability to migrate to the new version of MSN prior to starting Outlook. Under certain conditions, Setup performs the association even if you are not a member of MSN.


RESOLUTION

Choose one of the following methods:

Run Chginbx.exe

  1. Insert your Windows 98 compact disc into the drive.


  2. Double-click My Computer, and click the CD-ROM drive.


  3. Open the folder \Tools\Mtsutil, and double-click Chginbx.exe.


Delete the Outlook Icon and Create a Shortcut

  1. Drag the Outlook icon to the Recycle Bin.


  2. Click the Start button, point to Find, and click Files Or Folders.


  3. In the Named box, type outlook.exe and click Find Now.


  4. Right-click the file name in the Search Results list, and click Create Shortcut.


  5. Click Yes when you receive the message, 
    
      Windows cannot create a shortcut here.
      Do you want the shortcut to be placed on the desktop instead?


  6. Close Find Files.


Edit the Registry

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys And Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it.

To correct the error in the registry, follow these steps:
  1. Close all programs.


  2. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and click OK.


  3. Locate and open the following key:
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/CLSID/{00020D75-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}/ Shell/Open/Command


  4. Double-click the (Default) Value, type the location of Outlook.exe in the Value Data box, and click OK. The default location is:
    C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Outlook.exe


  5. On the Registry menu, click Exit, and restart your computer.


The Value Data that causes the MSN configuration dialog box to appear is:
C:\Program Files\Online Services\Msn\Msnmig.exe -InBox
