OL98: No Option to Upgrade from 40-bit to 128-bit Security

SYMPTOMS

When users try to upgrade from 40-bit to 128-bit security in Microsoft Outlook 98 they find that there is no option to do this in the Active Setup user interface.


CAUSE

There is a registry key that contains information about the previous setup. Outlook Active Setup does not allow the removal of components and so the registry entry is not changed. Setup assumes a reinstallation of the previous setup and does not allow the upgrade.


RESOLUTION

If you have the Outlook compact disc (CD), you can run Outdom.exe to update both Outlook and Microsoft Internet Explorer to 128-bit encryption.

As an alternative, you can remove a registry key using the Windows Registry Editor. You can then run Setup from the CD and choose 128-bit encryption.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Outlook 98.


MORE INFORMATION

Use either of the following methods to upgrade to 128-bit encryption.

Method 1

  1. Quit Outlook and all other open programs.


  2. Insert your Outlook CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, and in Windows Explorer, locate and double-click the file:
    <drive>:\EN\OL98\OUTDOM.EXE


  3. Click Yes when you receive the message: 
    
This will install the Microsoft Outlook and Internet Explorer 4.0
      Domestic Security Patch. Do you wish to continue?


  4. Click OK when you receive the message: 
    
Installation of the domestic security patch completed.


  5. Click Yes when you receive the message: 
    
You must restart your computer before the new settings will take
      effect. Do you want to restart your computer now?


Method 2

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys And Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it. If you are running Windows NT, you should also update your Emergency Repair Disk (ERD).

To upgrade to 128-bit encryption you need to first remove the registry key. This will force a First Run Setup instead of Maintenance Mode Setup at which time you can choose 128-bit encryption.

Remove the Registry Key

  1. Click Start and click Run. In the Open box, type regedit and click OK.


  2. Navigate to the following subkey:
    HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Active Setup \OutlookInstallInfo
    In the right pane, click to select Version.


  3. Press DELETE.


You can now run Setup from the compact disc and install the 128-bit version of Outlook 98.
