OL98: Outlook Express 5 Accounts and Mail Do Not Migrate During Install of Outlook 98

SYMPTOMS

During the installation of Outlook, you choose to upgrade and import mail and addresses from Outlook Express. When setup is finished you notice that the accounts, mail, and addresses were not upgraded.

RESOLUTION

Export the mail from Outlook Express to Outlook. Export addresses from Outlook Express and import them into Outlook.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Outlook 98.

Outlook will not migrate mail, addresses, or rules from Outlook Express 5 during setup. You can import your account settings and addresses from Outlook Express to Outlook, and you can export your mail directly from Outlook Express to Outlook. Outlook Rules must be recreated manually.

To Import Account Settings from Outlook Express

1. On the File menu, click Import and Export.



2. Click to select Import Internet Mail Account Settings, and click Next.



3. Click Microsoft Outlook Express, and click Next.



4. Verify the Display name, E-mail address, E-mail server names, and Connection method, clicking Next to move through the wizard, and then click Finish.

To Import Addresses from Outlook Express

1. On the File menu, click Import and Export.



2. Click to select Import Internet Mail and Addresses, and then click Next.



3. Click to select Outlook Express. Check to make sure that only Import Address Book is selected, and click Next.



4. Browse to locate Outlook Express and click OK. Click OK to the Import Summary.

To Export Mail to Outlook

1. In Outlook Express, on the File menu, point to Export, and click Messages.



2. Click OK.


Your mail is now in your local personal folder and is visible in Outlook.
