OL98: Outlook Starts When Checking for Mail on Your ISP

SYMPTOMS

After installing, Microsoft Outlook 98 starts automatically when you connect to your Internet Service Provider (ISP)and check for mail.


CAUSE

When you installed Outlook 98, Microsoft Internet Explorer was updated to use Outlook as your default e-mail client.


RESOLUTION

In Microsoft Internet Explorer, change the Mail service back to your previous mail client. Installing Outlook 98 modifies the registered file type for the "URL:MailTo Protocol" entry, to point to Outlook.

Change the Default Mail Client

To change the your default mail client, follow these steps:

  1. Start Microsoft Internet Explorer.


  2. On the View menu, click Options (in Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.x), or Internet Options (in Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.x.)


  3. On the Programs tab, in the Mail list, click to select the program you want to use as the default mail client and click OK.
