ID: Q195574

The information in this article applies to:
SYMPTOMS
You are using the Organize feature of Microsoft Outlook 98 to create rules
to manage mail messages and you notice that these rules do not display in
the list of rules when viewed in the Rules Wizard or, if the rules display,
they may not be modifiable. Additionally, rules created in this manner may
not operate when the rule conditions are met.
CAUSE
This condition may result when the file which holds the rules definitions
is damaged.
RESOLUTION
This file that stores the rules definition has an .rwz extension. If you
find it necessary to create a new .rwz file, all previously defined rules
will be lost.
Backing Up the Current Rules
You may be able to preserve the existing rules by exporting from the
current .rwz file. Before creating a new .rwz file, export the existing
rules by following these steps:
- On the Tools menu, click Rules Wizard and then click Options.
- Click Export Rules and then type a file name such as Backup in the File
Name box. Click Save.
NOTE: Damage to the existing .rwz file may prohibit the export process.
Creating a New .rwz File
To create a new .rwz file, follow these steps:
- On the Start menu, click Find and then Files and folders.
- In the Named box type *.rwz.
NOTE: In Coporate/Workgroup installations of Outlook 98, the .rwz file
uses the name of the MAPI profile as its file name. In Internet Mail
Only installations of Outlook, the file name is Microsoft Internet
Settings. In each case the extension is .rwz.
- In Look In, ensure that the entire hard drive is selected for the
search and that Include Subfolders is selected.
- Click Find now.
- When the .rwz file is located, right-click on the file and then click
Rename. Change the extension from .rwz to .old. On the File menu,
click close to exit the Find window.
When you start Outlook and define new rules, a new .rwz file is created.
