OL98: Outlook Today Shows Red "4" Instead of Arrow Symbol

SYMPTOMS

In Outlook Today, the Calendar Ticker, which is normally a right pointing red arrow pointing at the Active Appointment, may be displayed as the number 4 or some other character.


CAUSE

The Webdings font is either missing or damaged, or you have an exceptionally large number of fonts installed.

The Webding font is installed with Internet Explorer 4.x and Windows 98. There are three ways to replace this font.

Each of these methods is discussed later in this article.

There are also some third party Font utilities that may allow this font to be reinstalled if it was removed.

You can install a maximum of approximately 1000 TrueType fonts in Windows 95 or Windows 98. The exact number of TrueType fonts you can install varies, depending on the length of the TrueType font names and file names. Copy the Font From Another Computer

Locate the font in another computer in the C:\Windows\Fonts folder. Copy Webding.ttf to a floppy disk, and then from the floppy disk, copy the file to the C:\Windows\Fonts folder on the computer that is missing the font.

Reinstall Internet Explorer

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.


  2. Double-click the Add/Remove icon.


  3. Click to select Microsoft Internet Explorer 4, and then click Add/Remove.


  4. Click Add a component to Internet Explorer, and then click OK.


  5. Click Yes to let Active Setup determine what internet components are installed on your computer.


  6. Click to select Internet Explorer 4 Web Browser. Click Yes, OK, and then Next.


  7. Click to select the download site and then click Install Now.


Extract the File from the Windows 98 Cab Files

  1. Insert the Windows 98 Installation CD in the CD-ROM drive. Click Browse this CD.


  2. Click to open the Win98 folder.


  3. Double-click to open the Win98_47.cab folder.


  4. Right click the file webding.ttf and then click Extract.


  5. Extract the file to C:\Windows\Fonts.
