INTRODUCTION
------------

This utility is designed to correct synchronization problems which may
occur if you used an early beta version of Microsoft Outlook 98 with the
Corporate Workgroup installation option, in a Microsoft Exchange Server
configuration, on a WinCE 2.0 handheld device. It should not be used for
any other purpose.

Cecalfix.exe contains the following files:

   Calfix.exe 137,663 Bytes

SYMPTOMS
--------

Running HPC Explorer 1.1 or WinCE Services 2.0 ActiveSync while using Beta
2.2 or earlier builds of Outlook 98 and Exchange may cause some items in
the calendar to be corrupted. If this happens, Synchronization Log
messages containing the following error appear in the deleted items folder
soon after making a change in the calendar:

   18:41:48 Synchronizing Folder 'Calendar'
18:41:49 Error synchronizing message 'FW: Channel Bar UI: Closing
            Issues'
   18:41:49 [80070057-0-0-323]
   18:41:49 116 item(s) updated in online folder
   18:41:49 Error synchronizing folder
   18:41:49 [80070057-0-0-323]

Outlook 98 builds after build 8.5.5017.0 prevent calendar items from being
corrupted. To determine the build you are using, select About Microsoft
Outlook on the Help menu. The cause of the problem will be fixed in WinCE
services 2.1, which will be available through the supplier of your WinCE
handheld device.

Side effects of the synchronization error include:
 - Appointment reminders repeatedly fire when starting Outlook even though
they have been dismissed, or appointments not firing at all.

 - Delegates or other machines running Outlook against the same Microsoft
Exchange Server Mailbox see an out of date calendar.

 - Server Free/Busy information is out of date.

Important: You should only run CalFix.exe to fix the problem if there are
Synchronization Logs containing the above error appearing in the Outlook
Deleted Items folder.

INSTRUCTIONS
------------

1. If WinCE 2.0 or HPCE 1.1 is Explorer is installed with an Outlook
build later than 8.5.5017.0, Outlook does not use the calendar from the
local store and CalFix will not be able to fix the problem. Use
Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel to uninstall the WinCE services
2.0 or HPCE1.1 and restart Outlook before running the calendar fix
   tool.

2. Run Outlook 98 online to your Microsoft Exchange Server Mailbox.

3. Run Calfix.exe

4. Click Scan without selecting either check box to look for corrupted
   items.

5. If you receive the message, "ERROR: You can run this program only
online with OST configured," go back to Step 1 and ensure that you
   uninstalled the WinCE software.

6. If Calfix.exe finds corrupted items, select the Fix Known Corrupted
Properties check box and click Scan again.

7. If Calfix.exe fixes the same number of corrupted items as it finds,
you are done. Deselect the Fix Known Corrupted Properties checkbox and
   click Scan again to double-check.

8. If there are items with unknown corrupted properties, the only way to
fix the calendar is to delete these items. If you want to keep these
items, make a record of them before running the tool with the "Delete
items with unknown corrupted properties" option selected so you can
   recreate them manually afterwards.

9. Select the "Delete items with unknown corrupted properties" option and
   click Scan again.

Old appointment reminders may start appearing during this process. When
you are finished and have dismissed those, the calendar should start
working normally.
