ERROR MESSAGE

When you begin the broadcast of a presentation, the following error message is displayed when you test the microphone or start broadcasting your video stream:

An attempt to acquire a network resource failed

CAUSE

There is a port ID conflict. The conflict is with the Media Stream Broadcast Distribution (MSBB) port or the HTTP port between the Windows Media Encoder (also know as the NetShow encoder) and another device or service.

WHAT TO TRY

You will have to reset the port being used by the Audio.asd and Video.asd files. To reconfigure the port settings, follow these steps :

In the folder that contains the broadcast files for your Presentation Broadcast, locate the Audio.asd and Video.asd files.

Double-click Audio.asd.

When you go through the configuration wizard, you will resolve the port conflict. Otherwise Windows Media Encoder will start.

On the Encode menu, click Properties. The property pages appear.

Click the Output tab.

To enable the network options, click To Windows Media server(s) over a network, and then select the options for your network connections.

Click to select Allow Remote server(s) to connect via a fixed port, and choose the protocol to be used for the connection.

A Windows Media server can connect with the encoder via the MSBD protocol. To do this, the encoder must be at an identifiable IP address and have a dedicated port out of which the content can be streamed. MSBD is always available as a connection method. A Windows Media server can also connect with the encoder via HTTP. This is useful for streaming content over firewalls. If your encoder and server are separated by a firewall, HTTP is a good option. However, streaming data via HTTP has inherent limitations that result in poorer performance. HTTP streaming is not available if the encoder initiates the connection to the Windows Media server.

To select an open port on your encoder, click Query for both the MSBD and HTTP ports.

Write down the new port numbers that Query generated in step eight.

To apply the settings and exit the property pages, click OK. The Start dialog box appears.

To save your changes to the .asd file, click Save on the File menu.

Repeat steps two through eleven for the Video.asd and REX.ash files, using the port numbers that were generated for the Audio.asd's MSBD and HTTP ports.
