PPT2000: Hlink.dll Can't Be Loaded

SYMPTOMS

When you view a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation, you may receive one or both of the following errors.

Microsoft PowerPoint

"hlink.dll" can't be loaded.
-OR-
Microsoft PowerPoint

PowerPoint failed to load "hlink.dll".


CAUSE

The file hlink.dll is missing, damaged, or the wrong version. It must be reinstalled.


RESOLUTION

The hlink.dll must be deleted (if it exists) and replaced. The hlink.dll is stored in a compressed CAB file, and is installed with Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Save and close all running applications.


  2. On the Windows Start menu, point to Find, then click Files or Folders.


  3. In the Named field, type hlink.dll. In the Look In box, make sure that the C: drive is selected. Click Find Now.


  4. If the hlink.dll is found, right-click it, then click Rename. Rename it from hlink.DLL to hlink.OLD.


  5. Insert the Microsoft Office 2000 compact disc 1 into the CD-ROM drive.


  6. On the Windows Start menu, click Run.


  7. In the Open field, type the following if you are running Windows 95 or Windows 98:
    extract <drive>:\IE5\En\IE_S1.cab hlink.dll /l c:\<windows>\system
    If you are using Windows NT 4.0, type the following:
    extract <drive>:\IE5\En\IENT_S1.cab hlink.dll /l c:\<windows>\system32
    NOTE:<drive> is the drive letter of the CD ROM drive, and <windows> is the folder that contains Windows.



STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
