SUMMARY
When you create or modify a presentation in Microsoft PowerPoint, the
default font used by PowerPoint is Times New Roman. This article
describes how to change the default font for new or existing presentations
and presentations based on a design template.
MORE INFORMATION
To change the default font, use the appropriate method for your situation.
Method 1: If You Want to Change the Font for a New Presentation
- Start PowerPoint. Click Blank presentation, and click OK.
- In the New Slide dialog box, click Cancel. You should see a screen that says Click to add first slide.
- On the Format menu, click Font. Select the font and the font formatting you want to use, and click OK.
- On the File menu, click Save As. Under Save as Type, select Design Template (*.pot). Under File Name, type Blank Presentation. Click Save.
- On the File menu, click Close.
NOTE: Do not add a first slide.
The font you selected in the preceding steps will be the default font
for new presentations you create.
Method 2: If You Want to Change the Font for Existing Presentations
NOTE: This procedure does not modify existing text in your presentation. It does change the default font that PowerPoint uses, when you create any new text boxes or placeholders in your presentation.
- Start PowerPoint, and open the presentation you want to modify.
- Without selecting any objects or text boxes on the slide, click Font on the Format menu. Select the font and the font formatting you want to use, and click OK.
- On the File menu, click Save.
- On the File menu, click Close.
Method 3: If You Want to Change the Font for Specific Design Templates
NOTE: This method only works for new presentations that you create using the specific design template you select in step 3. If you apply this
template to an existing presentation, the default font information is not
transferred. To change the default font, use "Method 2: If You Want to
Change the Font for Existing Presentations."
- Start PowerPoint. Click Open An Existing Presentation, and then click OK.
- From the Files Of Type list in the Open dialog box, select Presentation Templates.
- Open the following folder:
C:\<Windows>\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates
Or, if you have User Profiles enabled in Windows 98, or you are on Windows NT:
C:\<Windows>\Profiles\<Username>\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates
Where <Windows> is the folder Windows resides, and <Username> is the username you use to log onto Windows.
Select the design template you want to modify and click Open.
- On the Format menu, click Font. Select the font and the font formatting you want to use and click OK.
- On the File menu, click Save.
- On the File menu, click Close.
NOTE: Do not add a first slide.
