SYMPTOMS

If you click Cancel while attempting to save a PowerPoint 97 slide as a Portable Network Graphic (.png) image file, PowerPoint creates a .png file anyway. However, this file is not a valid Portable Network Graphic file and you cannot import or open this graphic in any program.

In contrast, if you click Cancel while attempting to save a PowerPoint 97 slide as a CompuServe Graphics Interchange Format (.gif) or Joint Photographic Experts Group (.jpg) file, PowerPoint does not leave a .gif or .jpg file on your drive.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, run Windows Explorer and delete the resulting .png file.
