When you attempt to open a PowerPoint presentation from a network share on a Windows NT Server, you may receive the following message:
<Filename> is being modified by <Username>. Do you want to open it as
read-only?
You receive this message, even though the domain user (Username) on your
network, does not have the file open.
This error may occur if a third user, who has read-only rights to the share, opened the file as read-only and is viewing the file. PowerPoint sees that the file is in use and uses the name of the person who last modified the file.
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
