WD2000: ErrMsg: "The Mapisvc.inf file is missing" Using Address Book

SYMPTOMS

After you install Microsoft Office 2000, the following error message may appear when you click the Address Book icon in the Envelopes and Labels dialog box (Tools menu) in Microsoft Word:

The following unrecoverable error has occurred:

The Mapisvc.inf file is missing.

To exit, click Finish.
When you click Finish, the following message appears:
Microsoft Exchange
There are no profiles. Choose the Mail and Fax icon in the Control Panel to create a new profile.
When you click OK, the following message appears:
Microsoft Word
Logon failed. You must log on to Microsoft Exchange to access your address book.
address book. Error code: "Unspecified error".
When you click OK, you are returned to the Envelopes and Labels dialog box.


CAUSE

There is no Address Book to access. You are trying to access the Address Book on a computer that has never run a MAPI client, in this case Outlook.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, do the following:

  1. Quit Word. Start Outlook.


  2. When you run Outlook the first time, the Outlook 2000 Startup Wizard guides you through configuring the program.


  3. After Outlook is configured, you can use the Address Book in Word.



STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Outlook 2000.
