WD2000: Cannot Edit a Microsoft Organization Chart Object

SYMPTOMS

When you double-click a Microsoft Organization Chart object to edit the object, the following error message may appear:

Microsoft Word can't start the application required to open this object. This feature is not currently installed. Would you like to install it now?
If you click No to this message, Word displays the following error message:
The server application, source file, or item cannot be found.
Make sure the application is properly installed, and that it has not been deleted, moved, or renamed.


CAUSE

This functionality is by design when the Microsoft Organization Chart application is not installed and you attempt to edit the chart object. By default, Microsoft Organization Chart is set to install on first use of the application.

RESOLUTION

Install Microsoft Organization Chart using one of the following methods:

Method 1: Use the "Install on first use" Setup

Double-click the Microsoft Organization Chart object. When the following error message is displayed, click Yes.
Microsoft Word can't start the application required to open this object. This feature is not currently installed. Would you like to install it now?

Method 2: Use the Word 2000 Setup Program

Run Setup to install MS Organization Chart 2.0, using the following steps:
  1. Quit Microsoft Word and all other Microsoft Office applications.


  2. On the Windows Start menu, point to Settings and click Control Panel.


  3. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.


  4. On the Install/Uninstall tab, click to select Microsoft Word 2000 (Microsoft Office 2000) and click Add/Remove.


  5. Click Add or Remove Features.


  6. Click to expand Office Tools.


  7. Click Organization Chart and select Run from My Computer.


  8. Click Update Now.



STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
