WD2000: First Document Saved with Default Name When Creating a Frame Set

SYMPTOMS

The first document in a frame set is saved with a default file name if you do not save it before saving the frame set.

CAUSE

When creating a frame set, Word creates a new document to hold the frame set and displays the original document in the single frame of the new frame set. If you save the frame set document and the original document has not been saved, the original document is saved using a default name.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, save the original document before you create the frame set.

After you create the frame set but before you save the frame set, on the Window menu, click New Window. This causes Word to open a new window containing the original document. If you save the original document from the new window, you can specify a file name.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

If you create a new document (Document1) and do not save it before selecting New Frames Page (on the Format menu, click Frames) to create a new frame set, Word creates the new frame set (Document2) and displays the contents of Document1 in the single frame in Document2. If you then save Document2 (the frame set), the Save As dialog box opens, and you have the opportunity to alter the default file name assigned by Word. At the same time Document2 is saved, Document1 is saved using a default name assigned by Word.
