WD2000: Negative Indent (Tab) Resets to Zero When Saving as Web Page

SYMPTOMS

When you save as a Web page a Word document that contains text (or a bulleted/numbered list) with a negative indent, one or both of the following may occur:

Case 1

The negative indent is ignored, and the text (list) starts at the left margin (zero on the ruler).

Case 2

When a paragraph containing a negative indent also has an additional modified tab stop (manual tab setting), the text jumps to the second tab stop position.


CAUSE

By default, the Disable features not supported by option is selected. This prevents Word from saving features that are not supported by your Web browser.


RESOLUTION

To prevent Word from changing the layout of indentations (negative tab stops) when you save as a Web page, turn off the Disable features not supported by option using the following steps:

  1. In a new, blank document, click Options on the Tools menu.


  2. On the General tab, click Web Options.


  3. On the General tab, clear the Disable features not supported by check box, and then click OK.


  4. Click OK to close the Options dialog box.


Now you can open your Word document, save it as a Web page, and retain the negative indents on your paragraph or list.

NOTE: Making this change allows Word to save your Web page with features that may not be supported in your Web browser. However, when you view your Web page in your browser, these features may still not be visible as you intended.

Case 1

This functionality is by design when the Disable features not supported by option is selected.

Case 2

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

When you save as a Web page a Word document that contains features that are not supported by your Web browser, Word warns you with a message similar to the following:

Some of the features in this document aren't supported by Web browsers.

Text in the left margin will move to the right.
