SYMPTOMS

When you open a Word 2000 document in an earlier version of Word supporting WordArt, and the document contains WordArt formatted as In line with text, and the WordArt text has been set as vertical using WordArt Vertical Text, the WordArt appears distorted.

CAUSE

Versions of Word earlier than Word 2000 cannot display WordArt formatted as In line with text using WordArt Vertical Text.

WORKAROUND

To format a WordArt image as "float over text", do the following:

  1. In Word 2000, click to select the WordArt image.

  2. On the Format menu, click WordArt.

  3. On the Layout tab, click to select the appropriate Wrapping style, other than In line with text.

  4. Click OK.

To format a WordArt image using vertical text:
  1. In Word 2000, click to select the WordArt image.

  2. On the WordArt toolbar, click WordArt Vertical Text.
