Article ID: Q178280
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Exchange Server, versions 5.0, 5.5
  • Microsoft Outlook Web Access, version 5.5
  • Microsoft Exchange Active Server Components, version 5.0

IMPORTANT: This article contains information about editing the registry. Before you edit the registry, make sure you understand how to restore it if a problem occurs. For information about how to do this, view the "Restoring the Registry" Help topic in Regedit.exe or the "Restoring a Registry Key" Help topic in Regedt32.exe.

SYMPTOMS

When you try to access a client mailbox using Outlook Web Access (OWA), the following error message may appear:

VBScript Runtime Error '800A01A8' Object Required: 'Application (...)'
   \exchange\USA\logon.asp, Line 12

Also, Internet Information Server (IIS) services may log an error message such as the following, in the current log file in the \winnt\system32\logfiles directory:

   /exchange/logon.asp on line 9....object required

CAUSE

The above errors may be caused by file corruption in the Exchange Active Server Components. Also, a failed installation followed by a successful installation can cause the errors. The failed installation can cause the reinstallation process not to proceed as expected.

WORKAROUND

Removal and reinstallation of the Exchange Active Server Components from the Exchange Server CD-ROM Setup will correct the error and allow clients to log on using a Web browser. The following steps describe this procedure:

  1. Start the Exchange Server Setup program from the Exchange Server CD.
2. Select Add/Remove from the installation screen. 3. From the next Setup screen, clear the option for Outlook Web Access
(5.5) or Active Server Components (5.0), depending upon the version.
This will allow the Web access component to be removed.
4. To reinstall the components, start the Exchange Server Setup program
   again.
5. Select Add/Remove from the installation screen. 6. From the next Setup screen, check the option for Outlook Web Access or
Active Server Components, and continue with the installation.

MORE INFORMATION

WARNING: This section contains information about editing the registry. Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys And Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it.

Occasionally, when you try to remove the Active Server Components from Exchange Server Setup Add/Remove selection, the check box for this option cannot be cleared. You may not be able to remove only the Active Server Components option by using Add/Remove. Removing the related registry key will allow the Active Server Components to be reinstalled.

  1. Run the Registry Editor (REGEDT32.EXE).
2. Go to this registry key:
      \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\EXCHANGE\SETUP
3. Remove the String Value "Web Connector" from this key. This will clear
the Active Server Components option from the Exchange Server CD Setup
   program.
4. Reinstall the Active Server Components option.
