WD97: Error After Undoing a Deletion of a Section Break

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Word 97 for Windows, when you try to do any of the following:

• Print a document.



• Perform a mail merge.



• Delete the last character in a document.



• Scroll through a document.



• Select all and press the DELETE key.



• Open a file.

Winword.exe - Application error
The instruction at "0x3007ceac" referenced memory at "0x001252d1".
The memory could not be "read".

IPF
WINWORD caused an invalid page fault in module WINWORD.EXE at 0137:301e4f1f.

CAUSE

You previously deleted a section break and then undid the delete and the header in the section before the deleted section break contains a shape.

Formatting information for shapes in the document header is corrupt. This can occur when you undo the deletion of a section break, and the header of the previous section contains one or more shapes.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, try saving the document in RTF format and then opening the RTF document in Word 97.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

Steps to Reproduce the Problem

1. Start Word 97 and open a new blank document.



2. On the Insert menu, click Break, and select Next page under Section breaks. Click OK.



3. Insert a second section break.



4. Insert a shape in the header of page 1.



5. Delete the first section break.



6. On the Edit menu, click Undo Typing.
   
   Result: You receive the error message described under "Symptoms."
