SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to insert a clip into your document, you receive the following message:

Cannot Locate Clip
Clip Gallery cannot find the following file:
Directory_path\File_name

Select Update Location to specify the new location of clip files that have been moved from this folder.
Select Remove this Clip to remove this clip preview from Clip Gallery.
Where Directory_path is the drive and directory that the clip image is stored, and File_name is the name of the clip image file.

When you try to update the image location using Update Location, you cannot locate the clip file on your computer or network share. This occurs for all clips associated within a particular clip catalog collection.

CAUSE

On occasion, you may encounter clip previews in Clip Gallery that reference clip files that are no longer available on your computer or on a network share. This may occur if you have installed a newer version of a program that includes Clip Gallery 5.0. The catalog entries are not removed in this situation, though the clip art files are out of date and unavailable.

WORKAROUND

To remove old, outdated clip art catalog files from Clip Gallery 5.0, follow these steps:

  1. On the Windows Start menu, click Run.

  2. Click Browse and navigate to the following folder location:

    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Artgalry\
Select the file named Cag.exe, click Open, and then click OK. This will open Clip Gallery 5.0 in stand-alone mode.

  3. In Clip Gallery, search for the clip preview that does not have the corresponding clip file. Right-click that image, and click Clip Properties. Take note of the path and file name of the catalog file in the Catalog path entry.

NOTE: If you cannot see the end of the file path, place your insertion point over the text of the path, then use the click and drag operation to move the text to the right until you come to the end of the path.

  4. If the Catalog path indicates the clip preview is stored in Artgal50.mmc, then this is a file that you may have downloaded, or added in yourself, then deleted. To remove that single preview, follow these steps:
    1. Click Refresh

    2. Click Remove this Clip from the Cannot Locate Clip dialog box.

The old preview will be removed, and you can skip the rest of these steps.

  5. If the Catalog path indicates the clip preview is stored in a File_name.CAG catalog file then there is a good chance that the file is referencing clips that are no longer available. Make note of the location of the catalog file.

  6. Click OK, then click Cancel to exit out of Clip Gallery.

  7. In Windows Explorer, navigate to the location indicated by the Catalog path in the Clip Properties dialog box, and select the catalog file.

  8. On the File menu, click Delete.

  9. On the Windows Start menu, point to Find, then click Files or Folders.

  10. In the Named box, type the name of the catalog file you just deleted, minus the .MMC extension and give it a .SDB extension.

  11. Set the Look in location to Local hard drives, and click Find now.

  12. When the file is found, delete it from the list.

Following these steps will remove entries no longer available from Clip Gallery 5.0.
