SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to insert a clip into a document using Microsoft Clip Gallery 5, you receive the following error message:

Can not locate Clip. Clip Gallery can not find the following file........

CAUSE

The error message occurs when the clip that you are attempting to insert is no longer in its original location, or the location is not currently available to Clip Gallery.

RESOLUTION

You can resolve this issue by following these steps:

NOTE: If the clips are stored on a network location, verify that the location is available.

  1. Start the application, and open Clip Gallery.

  2. Right-click the clip, and click Recover.

  3. In the Clip Gallery Database Recovery dialog box, click Restore.

  4. Repeat step 2.

  5. In the Clip Gallery Restore dialog box, click Restore Properties.

Now, try to insert the clip again. If the error message still occurs, you can often narrow down your search by following these steps:
  1. Right-click the errant clip, and click Clip Properties.

  2. Write down the Name and Type information for the Clip.

  3. Write down the COMPLETE catalog path.

Now, search for the clip. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. On the Windows Start menu, point to Find, and click Files or Folders.

  2. Search the hard drive for the clip.

  3. If this fails to locate the clip, search the catalog path you wrote down (e.g.: \\Network Server\xxxxxxx).

  4. If this fails, search each of the client CD-ROM's.

Once you locate the clip, update the location by following these steps:
  1. Try to insert the clip into your document.

  2. From the Cannot Locate Clip dialog box, click Update Location.

  3. Using the results from the search, navigate to the clip location, and then complete the Update Location process.
