XL98: Cannot Edit Text Box with Unlocked Text

SYMPTOMS
When you click a text box with unlocked text on a protected worksheet,
you will experience the following symptoms:
- You are unable to select the text box in Edit mode.
-and-
- The Edit Text command is not available when you hold down the
CONTROL key and click the text box.
CAUSE
This behavior occurs when all of the following conditions are true:
- You created a text box and assigned a macro to it.
-and-
- You cleared the Lock Text option for the check box. (To locate the Lock
Text option, hold down the CONTROL key and click the border of the text
box. Click Format Text Box on the menu that appears and then click the
Protection tab.)
-and-
- You protected the worksheet.
When the worksheet is protected, you are cannot modify the text in a text
box if a macro has been assigned to it. In this case, the macro runs when
you click the text box.
RESOLUTION
To modify the text in the text box, unprotect the worksheet. To do this,
follow these steps:
- On the Tools menu, point to Protection, and click Unprotect Sheet.
- If you are prompted to enter a password, type your password, and click
OK.
- Hold down the CONTROL key, click the text box, and click Edit Text on
the menu that appears.
The text box is selected in Edit mode, and you can modify the text.
STATUS
This behavior is by design of Microsoft Excel 98.
