SYMPTOMS
Running the Viewer from Books Online causes a General Protection (GP)
Fault when run with DBWIN under the Debug Kernel, but only if the Fill Buffers option is selected from the Options/Settings dialog box within DBWIN.
RESOLUTION
Books Online works properly if the Fill Buffers option is turned
off in DBWIN.
STATUS

at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in
Microsoft Visual C++, version 6.0.
MORE INFORMATION
Step to Reproduce the Problem
- Start Windows after configuring it to use the Debug Kernel.
Windows can be configured to use the debug kernel by running the
N2d.bat batch file located in the Msvc\Bin directory. Note that the
Debug Kernel is not installed by default, so it may be necessary to
run the Visual C++ setup program again to install it. Installation
of the Debug Kernel is an option when performing a Custom
Installation and is available via the Tools button in the Custom
Installation dialog box.
- Start Windows. The Debug Kernel is active if you see
"Enhanced Mode Debug Windows 3.1" in the lower-right corner of
the screen.
- Start DBWIN.
- Under the Options menu, click Settings.
- Select the Fill Buffers check box, and click OK.
- With DBWIN still running, start Books Online.
- Click the Viewer button. Windows generates a GP Fault.
