BUG: Devenv.exe Caused an Invalid Page Fault in Module Msenv.dll

SYMPTOMS

When starting Visual InterDev 6.0 or Visual J++ 6.0, one of the following errors occurs:

DEVENV.EXE caused an invalid page fault in module MSENV.DLL

-or-

instruction at <instructions address> reference memory at <memory address> ox00000005-access denied

-or-

Unexpected error; quitting.

CAUSE

This error is often caused by a corrupt Views.prf file.

RESOLUTION

To fix this error:

Search the hard drives for Views.prf.

Wherever found, delete the files.

Restart Visual InterDev or Visual J++.

This file is automatically created when absent. However, window locations and views will all be lost and the default locations will be used.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a bug in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
