FIX: Remove Local Copy After Check-in Option Deletes Master

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

After adding a Web to source control, the Master Web's content is deleted.

-or-

After adding a new file to a source controlled web, the file is deleted.

-or-

After checking in a file, it is deleted.


CAUSE

The user has selected the option to Remove Local Copy After Add or Check In in Visual SourceSafe's Options dialog box.


RESOLUTION

There are two problems that need to be resolved. First, you will want to prevent this from happening again by using the following steps:

  1. In the SourceSafe Explorer, open the database as the affected user.


  2. From Tools menu, select Options, and click the Local Files tab.


  3. Clear the box to Remove Local Copy After Add or Check In.


  4. Click OK.


The second task is to restore your content. To do this, simply issue a Recalculate Links command within Visual InterDev or FrontPage. The latest content will be retrieved from Visual SourceSafe and replaced into your Web.

Note that since this setting is set for each individual database user, you will need to repeat the above steps for each user that has changed this setting.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a bug in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

This bug was corrected in Visual Studio 6.0 Service Pack 3.

Steps to Reproduce Behavior

  1. In the SourceSafe Explorer, open the database as the affected user.


  2. From Tools menu, select Options, and click the Local Files tab.


  3. Clear the box to Remove Local Copy After Add or Check In.


  4. Click OK.


  5. Within Visual InterDev or FrontPage attempt any of the three operations listed in the SYMPTOMS section.
