PRB: "Memory Could Not Be Read" Error in Visual Studio Setup

SYMPTOMS

When launching the installation of Microsoft Visual Studio, an error message similar to the following occurs:

The instruction at 0x10002BCC referenced memory at 0x10002BCC. The memory could not be read.


RESOLUTION

This error may occur on the Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 operating system. The cause of this error may be an exception triggered by a Performance Monitor counter. Below are steps to work around the error and successfully install Microsoft Visual Studio:

  1. Disable all performance counters. Refer to the REFERENCES section of this article on how to do this.


  2. Reboot the computer.


  3. Restart the Microsoft Visual Studio installation.
