PRB: VS 6 Needs Internet Explorer 4.01 SP1, New Virtual MachineID: Q202255
|
If you have Internet Explorer 4.01 installed and run the setup program for any of the Visual Studio applications, setup will force installation of Internet Explorer Service Pack 1. If you already have this service pack installed, setup will force an installation of Virtual Machine for Java.
A dialog box in setup states that Internet Explorer 4.01 is needed; however, what is actually required is Internet Explorer version 4.01 Service Pack 1 and a version of Virtual Machine for Java more recent than that provided in version 4.01 Service Pack 1.
This behavior is by design.
Setup looks for version 4.72.3110.8 or higher of Internet Explorer 4 in Windows NT and 4.72.3110 or higher in Windows 95/98.
Setup also requires a more recent version of Virtual Machine for Java than is included in Internet Explorer Service Pack 1. This more recent version is included in the version of Internet Explorer installed with Visual Studio, so setup will not need to install Virtual Machine for Java separately if you installed Internet Explorer from Visual Studio (or any of the developer tools included in Visual Studio).
NOTE 1: The new Virtual Machine for Java is the only difference between the version of Internet Explorer on the 6.0 developer tools CD-ROMs and the Internet Explorer 4.01 Service Pack 1 available elsewhere.
Note 2: You can install Internet Explorer separately from the setup wizard. To do so, go to the IE4 directory on the first CD-ROM of a 6.0 developer tool (such as Visual Studio 6.0) and run Ie4setup.exe. Visual Studio 6.0 setup should detect that Internet Explorer and Virtual Machine for Java have been installed and will not attempt to install them. There is, however, an extremely rare bug that causes setup to fail to detect Internet Explorer. For additional information on that bug, please see the following
