"No Domain Controller" Error Msg Using Connection Manager 1.0

SYMPTOMS

When you use Connection Manager to connect to a Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) server over a Remote Access Services (RAS) connection, you may receive the following error message:

No domain controller was available to validate your password.
You may not be able to gain access to some network resources."
When you use a Dial-Up Networking connection to connect, the error message does not occur.


CAUSE

There is a race condition in Windows 95 and Windows 98 that causes a logon to the network prematurely. This causes the logon not to succeed.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use any of the following methods:

Cancel the First Prompt for Windows Domain Logon

  1. When Windows prompts you for a password the first time, click cancel.


  2. When the PPTP connection connects, you are prompted for a password. Enter the password at this time.


Disable the Microsoft Client Binding on the PPP Adapter

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double- click Network.


  2. On the Configuration tab, click TCPIP->Dial-Up Adapter.


  3. Click Properties.


  4. Click the Binding tab.


  5. Click to clear the Client For Microsoft Networks check box.


  6. Click OK.


  7. Close Control Panel.


  8. Restart the computer when you are prompted.
