"Unknown Monitor" Message in New Hardware Profile

The information in this article applies to:


SYMPTOMS

When you create a new hardware profile by starting your computer in a new docking state or by copying an existing hardware profile in the System Properties dialog box, the first time you start your computer, you may receive the following message:

Unknown Monitor.


CAUSE

The monitor type is not maintained as part of a hardware profile; therefore, creating a new hardware profile does not copy existing monitor settings.


RESOLUTION

After you start your computer in a new hardware profile, reselect the monitor type in the Display Properties dialog box. To select a monitor type, follow these steps:

Windows 95

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.


  2. Double-click Display.


  3. Click the Settings tab, and then click Change Display Type.

    NOTE: If you are using Microsoft Windows 95 OEM Service Release 2 (OSR2), click Advanced Properties, and then click the Monitor tab.


  4. Click Show Compatible Devices, and then click the correct monitor setting for your hardware.

    NOTE: If you are using OSR2, click Change, click Show Compatible Devices, and then click the correct monitor setting for your hardware.


  5. Click OK, click Close, click OK, and then close Control Panel.


Windows 98

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.


  2. Double- click Display.


  3. Click the Settings tab, and then click Advanced.


  4. Click the Monitor tab, and then click Change.


  5. In the Manufacturers box, click the manufacturer of your monitor.


  6. In the Models box, click the monitor you are using, click OK, and then click OK again.


  7. Click OK.
