"Wake On Ring" Feature May Not Work with PCMCIA Modems

ID: Q205844

SYMPTOMS

When a laptop computer with a PCMCIA (PC Card) modem is left waiting for a call (fax, voicemail, BBS, terminal, and so on) and the computer goes into Standby mode, it may not wake up for incoming calls.

CAUSE

For the Wake On Ring feature to work, the laptop computer must support leaving the PC Card slots powered on during Standby mode. Otherwise, the PC Card devices (including modems) are turned off and do not function until the computer is resumed manually. If the computer supports leaving the PC Card slots powered on, Windows 98 keeps the PC Card sockets powered as long as there is a program (such as a fax program) holding the modem's COM port open.

RESOLUTION

Make sure your laptop computer supports leaving PC Card slots powered on during Standby mode. Some laptop computers may require changing a BIOS setting or upgrading the BIOS.

Please contact the laptop's manufacturer or the BIOS manufacturer for additional information.
