Backup Does Not Perform Unattended Scheduled Backups

SYMPTOM

When you use Task Scheduler to start an unattended backup job in Microsoft Backup, the backup job does not complete if it is left unattended. This behavior occurs even if you have configured Backup to perform an unattended backup, and then added this task to Task Scheduler.

You can use Task Scheduler to schedule programs that require user intervention, for example, Calculator. The Unattended option available in Backup is intended to minimize the need for input after the backup job is started.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because Task Scheduler only starts Microsoft Backup, not the backup job. The version of Backup that is included with Windows 98 does not support a backup job being started automatically, so you must be present to begin the backup job.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, upgrade to a backup program that supports completely unattended backup jobs.
