Black Screen When You Run a DirectX-Based Program
ID: Q184541
|
The information in this article applies to:
-
Microsoft Windows 95
-
Microsoft Windows 98
SYMPTOMS
When you run a DirectX-based program, your monitor may display a black
screen or may display only wavy lines on a black background.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if the DirectX-based program changes the default
refresh rate your display adapter sends to the monitor.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods:
- Change the refresh rate.
- Reduce the hardware acceleration of your display adapter.
Change the Refresh Rate
In Windows 95, display adapter drivers generally do not offer the
capability to change the display adapter's refresh rate setting. Consult
the display adapter's documentation or manufacturer for information about
how to change the refresh rate and check for the availability of updated
drivers that support this capability. Some third-party vendors also offer
programs with this capability.
In Windows 98, you can change the refresh rate using the Display tool
in Control Panel. To do so, follow these steps:
- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click Display, click the Settings tab, and then click
Advanced.
- Click the Adapter tab, and then click Adapter Default in the
Refresh Rate box.
- Click OK when you are prompted to test the setting.
- If the setting is displayed correctly, click Yes to keep the
setting.
If you still have problems when you attempt to run the DirectX-based
program, consult the video adapter's documentation or manufacturer to
determine the correct refresh rate setting for your monitor. If this does
not work, try reducing the hardware acceleration for the video adapter.
Reduce the Hardware Acceleration
NOTE: If you change the hardware acceleration setting, the overall
graphical performance may be reduced. To reduce the hardware acceleration
setting, follow these steps:
- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click System, click the Performance tab, and then click
Graphics.
- Move the Hardware Acceleration slider to one notch from the left (the
Basic setting), click OK, click Close, and then click Yes when you are
prompted to restart your computer.
