CompuServe 2000 Is Incompatible with Internet Connection Sharing

SYMPTOMS

Users are unable to connect to the Internet by using an Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) host with CompuServe 2000.

CAUSE

CompuServe 2000 is incompatible with ICS. CompuServe 2000 uses a proprietary dialer method for Internet access. ICS is designed to use connections that are specified as (Default) in the Internet tool in Control Panel.

If there is no such connection specified, or a connection cannot have its properties configured, ICS clients cannot initiate communications with the ICS host, and the host cannot dial out. Using a third-party Internet service provider (ISP) connection is also unsuccessful because CompuServe 2000 enforces a user limit. Only one user can be logged on to a single CompuServe 2000 account at a time.

RESOLUTION

Manually connect the ICS host computer to the Internet first. Then, ICS clients can browse the Internet.

CompuServe 4.0 is compatible with ICS because it uses a standard Dial-Up Networking connection for Internet access.
