SYMPTOMS

You may receive the following error message:

Error 172 (no server assigned) the request is not seen on the network.

CAUSE

This error message can occur if you are using both the Banyan VINES 32-bit network client and the Novell NetWare real-mode NetX client. The NetX client is being loaded before the Banyan 32-bit client. This causes Banyan VINES to try to operate over an IPXODI protocol stack, which it is not designed to do.

RESOLUTION

To prevent this issue from occurring, do not use Banyan's 32-bit VINES client with Novell's real-mode NetX client.
