Err Msg: Setup Cannot Check Your Hard Disks for Errors...

SYMPTOMS

When you upgrade Windows 95 to Windows 98, you may receive the following error message during the Scandisk portion of Windows 98 Setup:

Setup cannot check your hard disks for errors because there is not enough conventional memory available, free more conventional memory and rerun setup.


CAUSE

This error message can occur if there is not enough free conventional memory to run ScanDisk.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, increase the amount of free conventional memory, and then run Windows 98 Setup again. To increase the amount of free conventional memory, use either or both of the following methods:

Method 1

Using a text editor (such as Notepad), add the following lines to the Config.sys file and then restart your computer: 

   device=c:\windows\himem.sys
   device=c:\windows\emm386.exe noems
   dos=high,umb

Method 2

Using a text editor (such as Notepad), disable all non-essential drivers and programs in the Config.sys and Autoexec.bat files, and then restart your computer. To disable a driver or program, type "rem" (without quotation marks) and then SPACEBAR at the beginning of the line. Make sure to disable any real-mode driver for which there is a protected-mode equivalent.
