Err Msg: The Device Is Either Not Present or Not Functioning

SYMPTOMS

When you try to use the Microsoft Backup tool, you may receive the following error message:

The device is either not present or not functioning.

Also, two identical backup device entries may exist in the "Where to backup" box.

CAUSE

This issue can occur if your backup device is enumerated twice during the upgrade to Windows 98 Second Edition.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, select the other device listed in the Where to back up box in the Backup Wizard dialog box, and then try to use Backup again.
