SYMPTOMS

After you install the Hewlett Packard (HP) 4P scanner software and then use the HP scanner software to test the scanner, you may receive the following error message:

Error Starting Program
The HPSCNTST.DLL file is linked to missing export HPSJ32.DLL:35

When you click OK, you may receive the following error message:
C:\SCANJET\SCANTEST.EXE
A device attached to the system is not functioning.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur when the HP 4P scanner software replaces the Windows 98 version of the Hpsj32.dll file in the Windows\System folder. The Windows 98 Hpsj32.dll file is 36K in size and has a date stamp of 5/11/98.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods:

Method 1

Extract a new copy of the Hpsj32.dll file from your original Windows 98 CD-ROM to the Windows\System folder. The Hpsj32.dll file is located in the Driver12.cab cabinet file.

For information about how to use the Extract tool, type extract at a command prompt, or see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Method 2

Use Device Manager to redetect your scanner. To do so, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

  2. Double-click System, and then click the Device Manager tab.

  3. Double click the SCSI Devices branch to expand it, and then click HP C1130A Imaging Device.

  4. Click Remove, and then click Refresh.

NOTE: You may need to restart your computer if the scanner does not appear in Device Manager when you click Refresh.

Method 3

Use the Windows 98 scanner and camera test instead of the HP scanner software's test. To do so, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

  2. Double-click Scanners And Cameras, and then double-click HP Scanner 4P.

  3. Click Test Scanner Or Camera.

MORE INFORMATION

Although you receive the above error message when you attempt to use the HP scanner software to test the scanner, you can still use the HP 4P scanner using the HP software or Windows 98 Imaging.
