SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to install Acclaim Entertainment's NBA Jam Extreme program on a Windows 98-based computer, you may receive the following error message:

Cannot install this program on Windows NT

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the NBA Jam Extreme Setup program looks for a specific Windows version number that has changed in Windows 98.

RESOLUTION

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys And Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it.

To work around this issue, change the data value of the Version value to Windows 95 in the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current_Version

Record the current data value, and then change the data value of the VersionNumber value to 4.00.1111 in the following registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current_Version

Install the NBA Jam Extreme program. When you finish installing NBA Jam Extreme, change the data values back to their original values. To do so:

Change the data value of the Version value to Windows 98 in the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current_Version

Change the data value of the VersionNumber value to <recorded value> in the following registry key, where <recorded value> is the data value you recorded earlier:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current_Version

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this behavior is not caused by a problem in Windows 98, but may be caused by design changes in Windows 98. For more information about resolving this issue, contact the program's manufacturer.
