SYMPTOMS
When you attempt to install a component from the Microsoft Windows Update Web site, you may receive the following error message:
Error Downloading Component
CAUSE
This behavior can occur for any of the following reasons:
- Microsoft Internet Explorer security settings are preventing you from being able to download files from the Microsoft or Conxion Web site.
- The Windows Update site has left temporary files or folders in the C:\Windows\Msdownld.tmp folder. These temporary files may prevent downloading files from the Windows Update site.
RESOLUTION
Security Settings
To work around this behavior, add the Microsoft and Conxion Web sites to the Trusted Sites zone. To do so, follow these steps:
- Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet.
- Click the Security tab.
- In the Zone box, click Trusted sites zone, and then click Add Sites.
- Click to clear the Require server verification (https://) for all sites in this zone check box. In the Add this Web site to the zone box, type http://*.microsoft.com, and then click Add.
- In the Add this Web site to the zone box, type http://*.conxion.com, and then click Add.
- Click OK, and then click OK again.
Temporary Files
- Double-click My Computer, and then double-click drive C.
- Double-click the Windows folder, and then double-click the Msdownld.tmp folder.
- Delete all files and folders from this folder. These files contain information about the Windows Update site that may prevent files from being downloaded.
