Error Message: The MAPISVC.INF File Is Missing

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to import a Windows Messaging personal address book (PAB) into Outlook Express, you may receive the following error message:

The following unrecoverable error has occurred: The MAPISVC.INF file is missing

To exit, click Finish.

When you click Finish, you receive the following message:
There are no profiles. Choose the Mail and Fax icon in the Control Panel to create a new profile.

When you click OK, you receive the following message:
Address book import has completed successfully.

When you click OK, you are returned to the Address Book Import Tool dialog box, but the Windows Messaging personal address book is not imported into Outlook Express.


CAUSE

This error message can occur if Windows Messaging is not installed on your computer.


RESOLUTION



To resolve this behavior, install Windows Messaging, and then import the Windows Messaging personal address book into Outlook Express. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.


  2. In the Open box, type the following line

    <drive>:\tools\oldwin95\message\us\wms.exe

    where <drive> is the drive letter of the CD-ROM drive containing your Windows 98 CD-ROM.


  3. Create a new Windows Messaging profile using the personal address book you want to import into Outlook Express. For information about how to do so, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

MORE INFORMATION

Windows Messaging is not included in Windows 98. If you upgrade a Windows 95 installation in which Windows Messaging is installed, Windows Messaging is available in Windows 98.
