IBM Thinkpad 770 Stops Responding When You Start Windows 98ID: Q188690

When you try to start your Windows 98-based IBM ThinkPad 770 laptop computer, your computer may stop responding (hang).
This behavior can occur if the Csmapper.sys file is being loaded from the Config.sys file. The Csmapper.sys file prevents the use of linear-flash and synchronous random-access memory (SRAM) Personal Computer Memory Card International Association (PCMCIA) cards that use MS-DOS real-mode drivers. Because your computer is unable to access this type of memory, you may experience this behavior.
To resolve this issue, remove the real-mode drivers, and then install
protect-mode drivers. To do so, use the following steps:
