Icons Missing in Control PanelID: Q132885
|
When you open Control Panel from a shortcut or another program, only the
following five icons are available:
Add New Hardware
System
Modems
ODBC
Network.
This problem can occur if you are running a version of Control.exe from a previous version of Windows. The Control.exe file may be in the Windows folder, or it may be called directly by the shortcut from another folder.
Remove the shortcut that points to the Control.exe file. Make sure that
the Control.exe file in the Windows folder is the current version. If the
Control.exe file in the Windows folder is not the current one, remove or
rename it and then extract the current file from the Windows disks or CD-
ROM and place it in the Windows folder.
For information about how to extract a file, please see the following
article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
ARTICLE-ID: Q129605
TITLE : How to Extract Original Compressed Windows Files
This problem should occur only with shortcuts that specifically point to Control.exe or 16-bit Windows-based programs that calls Control.exe. If you open Control Panel by clicking Start, pointing to Settings, then clicking Control Panel, the problem does not occur because Control.exe is not called.
