Incorrect Network Protocol Installed for TV Data Adapter

SYMPTOMS

When you install Windows 98 on a computer that has only MS-DOS and a Novell network client (such as Netx or VLM) installed, if you choose to install the Microsoft WebTV for Windows optional component, the correct network protocol is not bound to the TV Data adapter that is installed in Network properties.


CAUSE

Setup does not install Transport Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) for the TV Data adapter when you install Windows 98 over a network using Internetworking Packet Exchange/Session Packet Exchange protocol (IPX/SPX), which is used by the Novell network clients listed above.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, install TCP/IP and bind it to the TV Data adapter. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.


  2. Double-click Network, and then click the Configuration tab.


  3. Click Add, click Protocol, and then click Add.


  4. In the Manufacturers box, click Microsoft. In the Network Protocols box, click TCP/IP, and then click OK.


  5. Click OK. When you are prompted to restart your computer, do so.


  6. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.


  7. Double-click Network, and then click the Configuration tab.


  8. Click TV Data Adapter, and then click Properties.


  9. On the Bindings tab, click the IPX/SPX check box to clear it, and then click OK.


  10. Click OK. When you are prompted to restart your computer, do so.
