Keyboard Layout Changes After You Upgrade to Windows 98

SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade your Microsoft Windows 95-based computer to Windows 98, your custom keyboard layout may be missing.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur when user profiles are enabled in Windows 95. When a custom keyboard layout option is selected in a user profile other than the default profile in Windows 95, the keyboard setting changes to that of the default user profile during an upgrade to Windows 98. This is because Setup only parses the setting for the default user during the upgrade to Windows 98.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, log on to the computer using a user profile other than the default, and then modify the keyboard layout in Windows 98:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

  2. Click Keyboard, click Language, click Properties, and then click the layout you want in the Keyboard layout box.

  3. Click OK, click OK, and then restart your computer.
