Long File Names Lost After Copying or Moving Files

SYMPTOMS

When you copy or move a file with a long file name, the long file name may be converted to an MS-DOS-compatible (short) file name in 8.3 format. For example, a file named "My Resume.doc" may be displayed as Myresu~1.doc after you copy or move it.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you are using Windows File Manager (Winfile.exe) to copy or move files. Windows File Manager is a 16-bit program included with Windows 95/98 for backwards compatibility with earlier Windows-based programs and does not support long file names.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, use Windows Explorer to copy or move files with long file names.
