MSN Not Available in Windows 98 Second Edition After Uninstalling MSN 2.5

ID: Q231712

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

Windows 98 includes MSN, The Microsoft Network, version 5.0 as a system component. If you upgrade over a previous version of Windows in which MSN 2.5 is installed, you have the option to remove the earlier version of MSN using the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel.

Uninstalling MSN 2.5 removes all MSN functionality from Windows 98 Second Edition, including MSN 5.0 functionality, and the method for restoring this functionality may not be obvious.

RESOLUTION

To restore MSN functionality after uninstalling MSN 2.5 in Windows 98 Second Edition:

  1. Using Windows Explorer or My computer, double-click the Rstormsn.exe file in the Tools\MTSutil\Rstormsn folder on the Windows 98 Second Edition CD-ROM.

  2. Click OK.

  3. Double-click the MSN icon on the desktop to install MSN.

If the Windows 98 Second Edition CD-ROM is not available, you can use this alternate method:
  1. Click Start, and then click Run.

  2. Type c:\windows\system\oobe\msoobe.exe /x, and then click OK. This starts MSN Internet Access Setup.

  3. Follow the instructions on the screen. When the wizard is finished, there is a new MSN Internet Access icon on the desktop.
